In occasione del 75° anniversario del massacro di 33.771 civili ebrei a Babyn Yar nei pressi della città ucraina di Kiev, si invita a partecipare al concorso internazionale di architettura per la creazione di un moderno spazio pubblico memoriale olistico integrato con la struttura della città attraverso elementi di progettazione del paesaggio.

Babyn Yar is a complex historical symbol. It became a part of world history in the context of two days in the fall of 1941, when Nazi executioners shot almost 34 000 Kyivan Jews at the Babyn Yar site. Thus, the territory became a world-renowned symbol of the Holocaust. But the real story of Babyn Yar does not end there. Throughout the following two years of German occupation, this site was used as a place of execution and burial of everyone who could be considered an enemy of the Nazis. Subsequently, the Soviet regime tried for decades to destroy the ravine (Yar) itself as well as the memory of its victims. Finally, after Ukraine became independent in 1991, Babyn Yar became symbolic of the fraught Ukrainian society which was unable to unite even in the face of a tragedy. It is this discrepancy between the world's and the Jewry's view of Babyn Yar as exclusively a symbol of the Holocaust, on the one hand, and all the ways in which this site is deeply tied to the general history of Kyiv and Ukraine, on the other, that forms the principal problem that is to be solved while creating a comprehensive memory site—the "Babyn Yar—Dorohozhychy Necropolis" memorial park.
The chief challenge that the organizers (and thus also the future entrants of the competition) are facing is the need to achieve an organic unity of all the aspects of history, whereby the Holocaust would be transformed from a unique occurrence into a symbol of all tragedies of the previous century while the mass shooting of Kyiv's Jews would become a core event of the entire history of Babyn Yar.
Competition Goal
The competition client has a motivation to see the projects arising from the competition materialize. However, the client is not the owner of the territory and is not legally entitled to implement the projects independently. Therefore, the only course of action are consistent efforts aimed at persuading the land owners and authorized land users, as well other stakeholders and the wider public of the necessity of having this project realized. The competition is envisioned as the first step toward that.
In the context of the politics of memory, the competition objective is to present to the public, the government institutions, and the professional community ideas of creating an integrated memorial space as an alternative to installing pompous memorial structures or installing standalone memorial signs.
In the humanitarian context, the competition objective is to create a space of reconciliation, to remove contradictions between different views of historical events, and to unite the society through the idea of a common land with a common tragic history.
In the spatial context, the competition objective is to create a modern holistic public memorial space integrated with the city structure through the means of landscape design.
In the educational context, the competition objective is to employ the means of landscape design to create a space capable of conveying the ideas of humanism, tolerance, democracy, civil society, human rights defense, as well as natural and spiritual ecology, to visitors, including those who have no connection to this place either through personal or through familial memory.
In the social context, the competition objective is to present to the public a model of quality holistic structuring and integration of an urban recreational area that is a historical-memorial site of global significance.
Participants in the competition are expected to be professional architects, landscape architects, and urban planners who have the right to provide professional design services according to the laws of the country where they are based. Design teams headed by a professional architect, landscape architect, or urban planner who have the right to provide professional design services can also participate. Participants may be citizens of any country.
Awards
• 1st prize - 17,000 USD;
• 2nd prize - 12,000 USD;
• 3rd prize - 7,000 USD;
• 4 runner-up prizes, at 3,000 USD each.
Authors of seven (7) best proposals will also receive an honorarium for submitting materials for the exhibition in the amount of 3,000 USD each, within one month of receipt of exhibition materials by the Promoter.
