The International Association for Humane Habitat (IAHH) is launching the 11th IAHH International Student Design Competition. Theme: the redevelopment of a high density urban community in an existing city.

The Competition shall focus on the theme of redevelopment of a dense residential locality in an existing city with an aim to transform the area into a vibrant humane and sustainable community through innovative planning, design and construction which addresses the key issue of evolving sustainable humane habitats.

Site Selection and Analysis
The participants are required to select a metropolitan area in their / any country and study the social, economic and environmental context of the metropolis and identify a site approximately admeasuring 10-15 ha. The analysis should be used to develop a planning and design brief for addressing the demands of a projected population over a period of 20-25 years.

Planning and Design Brief
The proposal should include designs for affordable and sustainable housing for different income and social groups, as found from the analysis of the area and supporting facilities and services.

    • The proposal should present a strategic plan for redevelopment of the area into a high density, humane and sustainable community with related shopping, social, health care, educational, recreational facilities and sustainable infrastructure. The community shall have a target population (maximum) of 20,000-30,000 people. The exact density will depend on the specifics of the selected metropolis.
    • The proposal should include urban design guidelines for redevelopment of the area into a humane and sustainable community, which could be used for such redevelopment in a given metropolitan area or region.
    • The proposal should have detailed plans, sections, elevations and views of affordable housing units of various sizes to suit different income and social groups.
    •  It is important to have an ecological approach towards evolution of a humane architecture synthesising buildings, landscape and infrastructure into a sustainable community. It should be based on bio-climatic design, using eco-friendly materials and technologies, with innovative design and planning approaches.

Architecture should reflect the philosophy of the planning and design team and their critical approach towards the key issues of urban redevelopment and re-inventing our metropolises as humane habitats. The humanizing our habitats shall include planning, designing, constructing, managing redevelopment processes aimed at promoting good health, safety, peace, harmony, sustainable development, greater equality and citizen participation symbolic of the spirit of 21th century.

Eligibility
The competition is open to all registered undergraduate / post graduate / doctoral students of any nationally recognized school, college or institution of architecture, engineering, planning, urban design, landscape design, environmental design and related disciplines of anthropology, sociology, economics, geography, social work, etc.

The student group shall be headed by a student of architecture. The participants may be individuals or a group of not more than 5 students. The students shall fill in the registration form and air-mail it along with supporting certificates from the head / director of the school / college / institution for each of the student participant.

  • Third Prize INRs. 15,000
  • Honorable Mentions: No cash prizes
