Il Dipartimento di Pianificazione dell'Università Iuav di Venezia organizza per l'anno accademico 2008-2009 il Master di II° livello in Urban Development and Reconstruction. Il Master ha come lingua ufficiale l'inglese e si rivolge a quanti intendono affrontare i temi dello sviluppo e della ricostruzione nelle aree urbane dei paesi in via di sviluppo e delle economie in transizione.
OBJECTIVES. The challenge of urban growth in developing and transition countries require theoretical approaches and operational tools properly geared to the specific social, economic and institutional conditions. In addition, sustainable urban development and reconstruction projects have to rest upon the recognition of local resources, know how and management capacity.
The objective of the Course is to address spatial, economic and institutional issues in the city of developing countries as well as transition economies. Focusing on governance and participation, it provides students with the analytical and professional skills required for designing, managing and implementing urban development and reconstruction projects.
COURSE STRUCTURE.. The course consists of two teaching modules and a fieldwork. At the end of the Course students are required to prepare a Project Document.
- Module 1 provides the theoretical and methodological framework to examine development and reconstruction in urban areas.
- Module 2 is structured around 2 lectures series and 3 workshops providing the analytical and operational tools for effective planning and management.
- Module 3 requires students to undertake an individual fieldwork within an ongoing urban development or reconstruction project.
To receive the Master Degree, students have to submit the Project Document. The Document discussion can take place via videoconference.
The Course is held in English. It includes lectures, seminars and tutored individual studies. Proficiency in English is essential Assessment Course assessment is based on written essays and/or team work.

Applications must arrive to Università IUAV di Venezia before 1.00 p.m., Friday, 14 November 2008. The selection results will be published on the Course website: www.masterurbandevelopment.it and www.iuav.it on Thursday, 20 November.
Fee. Tuition fee for the academic year 2008 -2009 is € 4.514,62. Accommodation and living expenses have to be paid for by applicants. A limited number of study grants may be offered by Università IUAV di Venezia to partially cover the fieldwork travel expenses. Participants should allow approximately € 800 per month to cover the cost of living in Venice.
